Our own Wayne McDonnell takes a look at Major League Baseball clubs willing to spend north of $100 million on top pitchers in the wake of the recent Zack Greinke injury.
“In the aftermath of the record breaking contracts for Felix Hernandez and Justin Verlander, it just seems natural for Kershaw to become the twelfth starting pitcher to join baseball’s $100 million club and the first to become an authentic $200 million pitcher. Once Kershaw eventually joins this exclusive club, he will also become the fifth starting pitcher drafted in the first round directly out of high school to eclipse the $100 million threshold. While Verlander’s newly signed contract could exceed $200 million, it all depends upon a $22 million 2020 vesting option based on a top five finish at age 36 in the 2019 Cy Young Award voting.”
