The awful incident of domestic violence perpetrated by NFL star Ray Rice in a casino hotel elevator earlier this year has created a maelstrom of controversy, finger-pointing, and second-guessing throughout the world of football and far beyond. But amidst all of the recrimination following the release of surveillance camera footage that shows the now-former Baltimore Ravens running back connecting on a knockout punch to his then-fiancée (and now-wife) Janay Palmer, a crucial fact has gone unremarked and unnoticed: no one knows whether the incident is a unique event, typical of professional athletes, or a reflection of a major social problem.
