Southampton Keen to Stop Liverpool at Anfield
Southampton make the trip to Anfield in order to play against a team that are searching for a third consecutive league victory. This victory is of paramount importance for Liverpool if they are to remain in the top five. Meanwhile, Southampton make this trip after having managed only one win in the six league games over the last few weeks. Manager Mauricio Pellegrino came to the club in the summer and he is already facing a lot of pressure.
Jurgen Klopp will be looking to overcome his club’s inconsistent 2017-18 campaign. The team has been able to get only three victories in the last eight games. Even though the team did manage to get victories over Huddersfield and West Ham, they have only managed to keep them in touch with the likes of Chelsea and not Manchester City. Chelsea are three points ahead of Liverpool even after these results. Liverpool have developed a reputation for overcoming teams with a lot of goals while immediately going on to struggle against lesser opponents. As expected, they were able to score seven goals in the two games against Huddersfield and West Ham. Yet, there is possibility of the team sustaining this form, as both these victories were achieved without star asset Philippe Coutinho.
Southampton continued to struggle in front of goal and this has also led to a struggle for points. Yet, the team remains extremely strong at the back and will be hard to break down – even in terms of the away game. The frustration at Southampton continues to be the search for goals.
In terms of team news, Jordan Henderson has provided a boost for Liverpool by returning to training, while Adam Lallana could also feature in this game. Southampton will have James Ward-Prowse back for selection, and this could result in a relegation to the bench for Sofiane Boufal.
