Celtic vs Bayern Munich Preview – Final Chance for Brendan Rodgers’ Men?

Champions League Media

Bayern Munich will come into the fourth match day of the Champions League group stages knowing that they cannot afford to drop any more points if they are to qualify for the knockout phases. Even though the club have a three-point advantage over third-placed Celtic, it is still too close to comfort. Celtic have shown that they are capable of coming up with a surprise result at any time – even though they have suffered heavy losses against PSG and Bayern in the previous games.

Brendan Rodgers’ outfit come into this match with a strong home record, but the team has suffered some disappointing results even in the Scottish Premier League. They are up against a Bayern Munich outfit that has rediscovered the winning touch under the regime of Jupp Heynckes. After the departure of Carlo Ancelotti, the club has had a return to a traditional way of playing and they have been quite strong at the back.

Heynckes was able to lead Bayern to a Champions League title during his last season in charge of the club. Even though the Bavarians are not expected to come out successful in the tournament, a push for the semi-finals or even the finals may be seen as a successful campaign.
Celtic, meanwhile, are hoping to finish in the top two places and possibly reach the knockout phases, although it may be one of the toughest tasks for Rodgers since his arrival at Celtic Park. PSG have been imperious and it effectively leaves the games against Bayern and Anderlecht as the only options for three points. Celtic have been able to get just two victories across all competitions in the last five home games, but they are up against a Bayern Munich outfit which has also not been commanding in this regard.

The victory over Anderlecht is the only successful Celtic in the Champions League campaign so far. It does not make for a good reading, but it does at least places the hoops with an opportunity for reaching the last 16 or even go beyond. One of the big disappointments for Celtic so far this season has been the lack of a single major goal threat. Last season, Mousa Dembele, Scott Sinclair, and Leigh Griffiths were scoring for fun. Yet, these players are yet to hit top form. Bayern Munich still really heavily upon Robert Lewandowski for the goals and the Poland international has not disappointed so far.
